Callum Wilson exit now likely at West Ham in latest twist as club sources speak out

Callum Wilson’s future at West Ham United beyond this season is now in extreme jeopardy.

talkSPORT reported on 19 January that Crystal Palace enquired about signing Wilson, while Celtic were also keen on securing his services.

Wilson looked destined to leave West Ham at the start of January, but after scoring a 93rd-minute winner against Spurs on 17 January, it was swiftly made clear that he wasn’t going to be let go.

And in March, the 34-year-old striker supposedly had a verbal agreement in place that his deal with the Hammers, which expires in the summer, could be extended by one year.

However, Wilson’s future at West Ham is still in doubt, with club sources now stating that his departure at the end of the season is increasingly likely.

Callum Wilson now set to leave West Ham

After years of searching for a successful striker, West Ham may have finally found one in Taty Castellanos, who has thrived since arriving from Lazio in the winter transfer window.

Although Wilson has played 28 times in all competitions for the Hammers, his game time has been limited in 2026, which made it all the more surprising that he had verbally agreed a contract extension in E20.

However, the Hammers may now part ways with him as they have sufficient depth in attack.

The Atheltic‘s West Ham correspondent Roshane Thomas reported on Thursday that, according to club sources, speaking on condition of anonymity to protect relationships, the 34-year-old is unlikely to remain at West Ham next season.

Nuno Espirito Santo has managed to get a lot out of Wilson, but it’s clear that his age is becoming a hindrance out of possession.

Both Castellanos and Pablo have come into the side and offered more off the ball, and with West Ham’s Premier League status in doubt, they may have to offload one of their forwards in the summer.

And it makes sense for Wilson to be the man who makes way, bringing his one-season spell in E20 to an end.

Why West Ham couldn’t afford to let Wilson leave in January

Having registered 117 goal contributions in the Premier League, Wilson is no stranger to digging his team out of trouble.

Wilson was fantastic for West Ham in November, scoring three goals in two games and adapting well to Nuno‘s system.

However, he was unfairly dropped during a four-match run in December, and it felt as though Nuno didn’t trust him to lead the line.

Wilson has demonstrated, over the past decade, that his movement in the box is elite and that he can be a reliable source of goals for the Hammers.

He has proven that on multiple occasions, and particularly during the first half of the season, he was a key asset for Nuno.

Wilson’s contributions could be the difference between Premier League survival and relegation, and if West Ham do stay up, fans will be incredibly grateful for the part he played this season.

It’s safe to say it would have been foolish to let him leave in January, but now, it feels like an inevitable conclusion.
