West Ham will look to make decade-long Premier League history vs Man City – here’s why

West Ham United are preparing for one of their toughest tests of their Premier League season this Saturday.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have been buoyed by an FA Cup penalty shoot-out win over London rivals Brentford on Monday night, after a thrilling tie ended 2-2 after 120 minutes.

A 1-0 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage in their last Premier League outing also served to significantly boost their survival chances, as the Hammers now sit level with Nottingham Forest in 17th on 28 points.

However, West Ham take on Man City in a 8pm kick-off on Saturday, as they look to claim a major scalp against a City side who haven’t lost any of their last 11 games in all competitions.

What is West Ham’s Premier League record vs Man City?

But, regardless of how difficult a test this will be for West Ham, we’re at the stage of the season where there’s no such thing as a free hit anymore.

And, should Nuno’s men be able to take something from Guardiola’s gang, then what that would do for the confidence levels in the Irons’ camp could make all the difference between Championship and Premier League football next term.

Getting that result is going to be far easier said than done though, and when looking at the Premier League history books that have documented this fixture, it doesn’t make for great reading from a Hammers perspective.

Indeed, West Ham haven’t beaten Man City in any of their last 20 Premier League games, with City winning 17 and the other three being draws.

Across that time period, West Ham have scored just 14 goals, whilst the Cityzens have fired home 55 times.

The last time the Hammers beat City in a top flight game was all the way back in September 2015, when goals from Victor Moses and Diafra Sakho earned a 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium.

Man City beat West Ham 3-0 in this season’s reverse fixture, and haven’t failed to score less than three goals in any single Premier League game against the Hammers across the last six meetings.

What has Man City’s away record been like this season?

So, it’s fair to say that straws will be getting clutched regarding the possibility of a West Ham win, with any nugget of hope being priceless heading into this one.

And, in Man City’s away record in the Premier League this season, West Ham may just have found one, as Guardiola’s side haven’t been excellent on their travels this term.

They’ve won seven of their 14 away games so far, with three draws and four defeats, culminating in 24 points and a goal difference of just plus seven.

Compare that to their 11 wins from 15 home games, with one defeat and 36 points picked up, and you can see how they’ve been far from unbeatable in enemy territory this year.

This is sure to be the message that Nuno will express onto his players ahead of Saturday’s game, whilst City also have the small matter of playing Real Madrid away from home in the Champions League on Tuesday night too.
