Summerville gets the West Ham crowd going

Crysensio Summerville had the first West Ham chance in the contest in the 14th minute, but he blazed an effort over the bar after Mateus Fernandes had found him in space.

The Dutch winger was well onside and should have done better with the effort, at least getting in on target.

Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith noticed the supporters get excited by the chance, as the noise level in the stadium went up.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “West Ham’s first bit of decent football and threat and you can hear the volume in the stadium rise. You want Summerville on the end of that, he or Bowen, but he snatches at it.”

Nuno spotted calming players down

The Irons were pushing for a second immediately after Mavropanos had opened the scoring, but Nuno did not seem to be happy with that.

The Portuguese manager seemed to gesticulate to his players to calm down and take their time, rather than rushing forward and potentially losing the ball, and being vulnerable to the counterattack.

It was probably a good idea considering how threatening the Old Gold had been before the hosts took the lead, nearly taking the lead themselves a few times.

West Ham fans joke after Mavropanos masterclass

Mavropanos scored the fourth goal, his second of the game, with a stunning bicycle kick, and supporters were loving it.

When he got on the ball in the 85th minute, they wanted him to have an effort from range to get his hat-trick.

According to The Guardian‘s live blog, the Hammers fans could be heard screaming for the Greek defender to shoot.

Unfortunately, they did not get their wish, he did not hammer another one home before the final whistle was blown, but they will not care after the result eased their woes.
