West Ham may hand Kaelan Casey first-team role if relegated as he impresses at Leyton Orient
West Ham United will be encouraged by Kaelan Casey’s loan spell since joining Leyton Orient in January.
The 21-year-old centre-back is a product of West Ham’s academy system, and has made three first-team appearances for the Hammers in his senior career so far.
He’s featured twice in the Premier League and once in the UEFA Conference League respectively, which shows how highly-rated he is as he’s skipped the typical League Cup introductory path to the first-team.
London Stadium chiefs evidently felt as though he still had a little bit of learning and experience to gather before entrusting him with a larger first-team role, however.
But, with just seven games of the Premier League season to go, Club decision-makers will be closely monitoring the progress of all their players out on loan ahead of the summer transfer window.

How has Kaelan Casey performed for Leyton Orient?
West Ham recalled Casey from Swansea City in January, having initially joined the Championship outfit on loan in this season’s summer window.
However, the England youth international made just eight second tier appearances during the first half of this term, starting three of those, culminating in a mere 290 minutes of league football for the Welsh side.
| Casey’s 25-26 League One stats | Result |
| Minutes per game | 62 |
| Pass accuracy | 80% |
| Clearances per game | 7.0 |
| Total duels won | 63% |
| Aerial duels won | 64% |
West Ham instantly found a new home for him upon his return to the London Stadium though, sending him much closer to home by joining League One outfit Leyton Orient for the rest of the season.
And, his spell at Brisbane Road has been a highly fruitful one so far, as he’s made 11 third tier appearances with eight of those being as part of the starting XI.
As per Sofascore, Casey has made zero errors leading to opposition shots, won 60 per cent of his ground duels, 64 per cent of his aerial duels and 63 per cent of his total duels respectively.
He’s also averaged an excellent 7.0 clearances per game, recovered 2.1 balls per game, averaged 48.6 touches per match and recorded a 91 per cent passing accuracy inside his own half.
Casey could save West Ham a lot of money in the Championship
If West Ham are playing Championship football next season, then there are bound to be a host of current senior centre-backs leaving the London Stadium in the summer.
Casey is contracted with the Hammers until the summer of 2027, meaning 2026-27 really is a make or break year for him at the Club.
At 21, he’s already at an age where he can no longer rely on the relative safety of youth team football, and he needs to start kick-starting his senior career on a permanent basis from next term onwards.
However, given how well he’s doing in League One and coupled with the fact he didn’t get enough opportunities to prove himself in the Championship, Casey should be in the first-team picture if the Hammers are in the second tier.
