West Ham badly need Crysencio Summerville back but can breathe sigh of relief over injury progress

West Ham United have been given a major boost over Crysencio Summerville’s fitness.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have sorely missed the in-form forward, who has now sat out of the last two matches after suffering a calf injury against Brentford on March 9.

The 24-year-old has registered nine goal contributions since the turn of the year, breathing new life into the Irons’ fight to avoid Premier League relegation this season.

But, much to his disappointment, his setback meant he was not called up for the Netherlands’ squad, despite Ronald Koeman openly admitting he had planned to select him.

Summerville will instead hope to return after the international break, and judging by one impressive statistic, that day cannot come soon enough for his club.

Crysencio Summerville’s importance in numbers

Summerville’s importance under Nuno cannot be underestimated. Without him, West Ham look too one-dimensional and are heavily reliant on Jarrod Bowen to cause problems.

The former Leeds United ace is crucial at helping lead the Irons up the pitch, with his touch-tight dribbling and speed pinning full-backs and opening up space for team-mates.

That much has been proven by the fact that he has registered 34 successful take-ons this season, putting him 15th in the whole of the Premier League – an impressive feat.

But look deeper, and his influence on everything West Ham do is obvious.

With seven goals from his 27 matches to date, he scores roughly 0.30 times per 90, according to Sofascore. This is a reasonable return for a winger.

Summerville also takes 1.89 shots per game and relishes cutting inside.

Many of his touches come down the left-hand side, on the touchline, and inside the channel, suggesting he is adept at both crossing into the box and pulling the trigger himself.

With a take-on success rate of 47.2 per cent, the ace has gained a fearsome reputation for turning defenders inside out. Long may that continue in the Hammers’ survival scrap.

Latest Summerville injury update

Judging by Koeman’s comments, Summerville’s injury return is clearly not far off.

Speaking during a press conference on Monday, the Netherlands boss said: “He was set to be called up for this international break.

“If he stays fit, I see him more as a squad player than the young prospects we’ve given a chance in the past. He also plays in a position where we don’t have much depth.

“Based on our assessment, he’s making fantastic progress.”

While Summerville will have been bitterly disappointed to not make the squad, he can surely all but guarantee his spot at the World Cup by inspiring West Ham to safety.
