Sky Sports guilty of ultimate West Ham disrespect after never-before-done moment

Sky Sports showed serious disrespect to West Ham United and their supporters during Sunday’s live coverage of the Newcastle United game.

West Ham were beaten 3-1 at St James’ Park in a defeat that all but confirms Premier League relegation for Nuno Espirito Santo‘s side.

A point for Tottenham against either Chelsea away or Everton at home over the next six days will effectively confirm the Irons’ fate, with their goal difference way worse than Spurs’.

United were made to pay for a dreadful start in the North-East in which they trailed 2-0 inside the opening quarter of the contest.

And while West Ham managed to show a little pride late on, you would not have known it judging by Sky’s questionable coverage.

Sky Sports bizarrely cut away from Newcastle vs West Ham coverage

Taty Castellanos’ Goal of the Season contender gave West Ham just a glimmer of hope with around 25 minutes to play, including added time.

West Ham went all out to find a second goal that really would have made it game on, but Sky clearly did not feel the jeopardy.

Instead, the host broadcaster decided to cut away to a pitchside interview with Kieran Trippier, who was playing his final home game for Newcastle.

While it was clearly a special day for Trippier, the truth is nobody cares beyond the borders of Newcastle.

The narrative of this match was centred around West Ham’s relegation battle, rather than Trippier’s final home game.

As pointed out by broadcaster James Richardson via The Totally Football Show, it was something not seen before in a similar context.

“Sky, curiously with West Ham still challenging, decided we couldn’t wait any longer to speak to Trippier,” he said. “I can’t recall that for anybody else.”

Sky have been experimenting with interviews at half-time and during games, but to cut away at this stage in the game, with so much on the line, just shows serious disrespect.

West Ham can’t even rely on Tottenham’s Stamford Bridge hoodoo

Nuno has to take the blame for West Ham’s loss to Newcastle due to his team selection, which seemed strange before kick-off and that was proved within minutes.

West Ham fans are holding out hope that Chelsea can at least do them a favour and take this battle down to the final weekend, when tensions will be extremely high.

It has been widely cited how Spurs have won just once at Stamford Bridge in 35 attempts in the league, with that solitary victory coming in 2018.

However, Spurs have picked up 11 draws across that period and a point is all they need on their trip to West London on Tuesday.

It is the worst possible way to go down, but West Ham only have themselves to blame.
