West Ham Women: Oona Siren eases pressure on Rita Guarino after Goal of the Season contender
West Ham United Women gem Oona Siren scored a Women’s Super League Goal of the Season contender in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with London City Lionesses.
Heading into the game, West Ham were just three points above the relegation zone, with basement side Leicester City facing Brighton later on that day.
Things did not look good for Rita Guarino’s side when Jana Fernandez scored a 20th-minute opener at Chigwell Construction Stadium.
After a thumping 5-0 loss to Arsenal last time out in the league, some may have feared the worst after this setback.
But West Ham midfielder Siren’s outrageous volley from nearly 25 yards ensured they picked up a deserved point, while Leicester lost against Brighton in a double Sunday boost.

Oona Siren enjoys big week at West Ham
Siren swapped LSK Kvinner for West Ham in the summer of 2024 and since then she has been an important member of the first-team squad.
Despite the Hammers getting pumped by Arsenal on 21 March, the 25-year-old brought up her 50th appearance for the east London outfit – who have done well since the WSL’s return.
| West Ham’s post international break results | League position |
| West Ham 0-0 Man Utd | Fourth |
| Arsenal 5-0 West Ham | Third |
| West Ham 1-1 London City | Seventh |
Creditable draws against Europe-chasing Manchester United and mid table London City mean they are now four points clear of Leicester, who look destined for a relegation play-off.
While Leicester still have time to overhaul West Ham, Siren said she was proud of her teammates for hanging tough, while also affording a smile at her brilliant strike.
“Yeah, it was probably the nicest goal I have scored so far [in my career]. It was quite a difficult ball, so I had to smash it, and it happened to go in the goal,” she told West Ham TV.
“It was really nice [to celebrate with my teammates] and I am proud of the team that we worked really hard and got one point.”
In addition to bringing up half a century of appearances for West Ham, this was also the Finn’s first goal for the club.
Rita Guarino looks safe – for now
West Ham weren’t far off securing a mid-table finish in the WSL last term as they ended up in ninth, two points behind sixth-placed Aston Villa.
Hopes may have been high on building on last season’s positives but so far, it has been an uninspiring one for the Hammers.
| West Ham’s below-par season | Worrying statistics |
| Points total and league position | 13 points, 19 games, 11th |
| Goals conceded | 41, joint-worst in the WSL |
| Goals scored | 16, second-worst in the WSL |
A growing number of West Ham fans have questioned whether Guarino is the right person for the job as they hover above the relegation zone.
With three games to go, West Ham may just about hold off Leicester, although the Foxes have lost seven games in a row.
Next up, West Ham travel to 10th-placed Liverpool, before rounding off the season away to ninth-positioned Villa and table toppers Manchester City.
If they fail to pick up any points in this stretch, questions may be asked about Guarino’s future at the club.
