Nuno Espirito Santo can’t make Finlay Herrick mistake after West Ham debut

Nuno Espirito Santo must not harm Finlay Herrick’s development after his West Ham United debut against Leeds United.

The 20-year-old came on in the final minute of the Hammers’ FA Cup exit after Alphonse Areola was injured.

He saved the opening penalty in the shootout but ultimately could not prevent the London Stadium side from being eliminated by the Whites on 5 April.

There have been calls for the youngster to be thrown into the deep end and handed the number one role for the Irons.

However, West Ham must resist the urge to do that to Herrick, as it is not the right move at the moment.

Why it would be unfair for Herrick to be West Ham’s first choice goalkeeper

Herrick is one of West Ham’s most promising talents, but he is not ready for regular first-team football at the highest level.

It would likely completely shatter his confidence and the E20 outfit are in the middle of a relegation battle, so they can’t afford any mistakes.

Throwing the academy graduate into the side, at this point in the season, would be a mistake, in fact, it would probably be negligent.

What’s next for Herrick?

Herrick needs to go on loan, to a Football League club, where he can continue to develop his game and learn the rigours of senior football.

That would be the best move to ensure that he is ready to step up and become a regular when the time comes in East London.

His only previous experience was with non-league Boreham Wood, which does not leave him ready for top-flight football and the heavy set of expectations that come with that.

It was a highly encouraging debut, but there was little pressure on him, as he was thrust into a situation that nobody expected to happen.

If Areola is out, Mads Hermansen should start over Herrick, given that he has much more experience and mental fortitude, as he has already been a regular part of the first team.

It would not be fair to Herrick if he was handed the chance to play for the senior side at the highest level, as he would likely crumble and be responsible for relegation to the Championship.
