Kaelan Casey: West Ham future examined as Leyton Orient loan spell highlights concern

Kaelan Casey’s time away from West Ham United has certainly brought mixed reviews.

Once the Hammers learn of the division they will be playing their football in next season, there are a number of tasks that will need to be fulfilled this summer.

And one of the main priorities will be deciding on the future of their young players, especially those who have spent time on loan.

Casey is one of them, having spent time with Swansea and Leyton Orient in League One, the latter being the side he will spend the rest of the season with.

And more often than not, Casey has struggled to stand out for Orient, which isn’t a good thing for West Ham.

How has Kaelan Casey fared at Orient?

Casey has featured regularly since moving there on loan in the winter, which will be the first positive that the Hammers will take away.

He’s made 13 appearances in League One, but there are very few positives to take from his stats.

League OneCasey

Casey has won just 61.3 per cent of his duels this season, which places him among the bottom 48.3 per cent of League One defenders.

His lack of physicality saw him struggle with Swansea, and now with Orient.

On top of that, his restrictions on the ball also fail to bode well for a future in the Premier League, with the 21-year-old having failed to bring the ball out of defence once, while completing just 79.3 per cent of his passes.

Both of those metrics are crucial in the Premier League, and Casey has yet to showcase that he thrives in it.

However, if West Ham are relegated, he may be able to stake a claim for his place.

What’s next for Casey at West Ham?

Casey will have one year left on his deal at West Ham come the end of the season, with no signs yet that it will be extended.

The Hammers may look to find him one more loan move to make a final assessment, before deciding on whether a new contract is worth it.

However, given his struggles this season, a permanent exit seems more likely, and it would be a move to benefit both parties.
