Emerson: Ex-West Ham star sees European record rivalled after Aston Villa Europa League win

Emerson was previously the only player to hold a European silverware record; an achievement he crowned off whilst at West Ham United.

7 June 2023: that’s a date that not only lives on in West Ham history, but one that also feels like a lifetime ago for Hammers supporters.

Indeed, it was the night that David Moyes‘ side became Europa Conference League champions, beating Fiorentina by two goals to one in Prague.

Fast-forward to the present day, and the Irons team of 2025-26 are staring down the barrel of Premier League relegation ahead of their final game against Leeds United.

One player who played a big part in West Ham’s Conference League win that year was Emerson, and it was a night that until this week, saw him stand alone in the history books.

Which Aston Villa player has Emerson lost his European record to?

That aforementioned night in Prague saw Emerson complete his collection of European silverware.

Prior to that Conference League final, the defender had already won a UEFA Super Cup, Champions League and a Europa League respectively, all of which came during his time with Chelsea.

Emerson’s career honoursTimes won
Champions League1, 20-21
Europa League1, 18-19
FA Cup1, 17-18
UEFA Super Cup1, 21-22
Conference League1, 22-23
European Championships (Italy)1, 2020

Beating Fiorentina saw him cap off his collection of winners’ medals in UEFA competitions, and at the time, he was the only ever play to do this.

However, that’s now no longer the case, as Aston Villa’s Europa League win over Freiburg on Wednesday night has added a second name to that honours list.

Tammy Abraham, despite not playing a minute in Villa’s 3-0 victory in Istanbul, did turn out three times in the competition for Unai Emery’s side this season, earning him a winners’ medal.

The big striker won the Champions League and UEFA Super Cup with Chelsea, whilst he was part of the Roma side that lifted the Conference League in the 2021-22 campaign respectively.

How good was Emerson in West Ham’s 2022-23 season?

Signed in the summer of 2022 from Chelsea, Emerson’s debut 2022-23 campaign with West Ham was one to remember.

Despite Moyes’ men finishing a modest 14th in the Premier League, which is a position every Hammers fan would snap your hands off for now, they did of course win the Conference League.

Emerson turned out 22 times in the top flight that term, but he really made his mark in Europe, making eight appearances whilst contributing a goal and an assist too.

As per FotMob, the Italian left-back completed 13 successful dribbles, which was the most of any player in that position in the competition that season.

He also completed 300 passes, took seven shots, created seven chances, won 38 duels, took 18 touches in the opposition box and made 33 defensive contributions.

Emerson is now starring for Marseille in Ligue 1, and has just banked a 2025-26 campaign that saw him play 28 times in the French top flight, from which he started 23 times and provided three assists respectively.
