West Ham state of play: Injury news, upcoming fixtures and what’s needed to dodge relegation

West Ham United are aiming to reach the FA Cup semi-finals and secure Premier League safety in the coming weeks as they return to action this weekend.

Nuno Espirito Santo‘s side headed into the international break with a disappointing 2-0 loss to Aston Villa and will look to set that right on Sunday against Leeds United.

The Hammers have home advantage for this quarter-final tie, with a packed-out London Stadium expected.

The east London outfit are one point behind 17th-placed Tottenham with seven games to go, as West Ham try to pull off a survival bid.

While their players have raised their game in recent months, West Ham have some injuries to contend with. For this and more, here is a round-up from West Ham Zone on the club’s state of play.

West Ham injury latest as Crysencio Summerville remains a doubt

Crysencio Summerville has been out with a calf injury since sustaining the issue on 9 March in an FA Cup fifth round win over Brentford.

Talk mounted over Summerville getting a Netherlands call-up for the March international break but injury put pay to those goals.

In addition to the former Leeds man, backup goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski is still out with a back issue and defender Jean-Clair Todibo has been sidelined with a calf problem.

When asked for the latest squad update, Nuno told reporters on Friday: “We’re assessing players from the international break.

“It’s positive that many of them achieved big things, some are not so happy, some return with issues…assessing.”

When asked about Summerville’s condition, he replied: “We’re trying to get him [ready] as soon as possible. We are assessing day by day to see how he improves.

“First we have to assess. If he feels good, we are not at that point yet. There is still one day to go and then we take decisions.”

What games do West Ham have left?

It remains to be seen what West Ham line-up Nuno picks for the visit of Leeds, who are four points and three places above them in the table.

After that game, they take on Premier League basement side Wolves, before travelling to lowly Crystal Palace.

They round off April at home to Europe-chasing Everton, in a game where David Moyes will return to his old stomping ground.

They begin the final month of the season away to London neighbours Brentford before hosting Premier League leaders Arsenal.

West Ham are then away to Newcastle United before locking horns with Leeds on the final day of the season. That could be a relegation-decider but both teams will hope it won’t come to that.

It is uncertain how many points will be needed to stay up. All West Ham need to do, is return to winning ways and fast.
