Crysencio Summerville: Everything West Ham United fans need to know about injury return

Crysencio Summerville picked up an injury for West Ham United while in top form, but his return should be around the corner.

The winger sustained a calf injury against Brentford as the Irons progressed into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup at the start of March.

Before his injury, Summerville had begun showing exactly why he was purchased by the Hammers. The 24-year-old picked up nine goal contributions in the 12 games before his setback.

A return in the near future would provide a timely boost for the London Stadium outfit, who are currently positioned in the relegation zone.

Summerville has missed crucial games for West Ham, and Nuno will be hoping to have him back as soon as possible ahead of the final push.

Here is everything we currently know about Summerville’s return from injury.

How close is Crysencio Summerville to returning for West Ham?

While any injury in football is a blow, the Hammers may feel slightly fortunate that Summerville’s arrived before an international break.

The timing of his calf injury meant he has missed a few games for the E20 outfit, with just two Premier League matches played without him being available.

On a personal note, the West Ham star did miss out on an inaugural call-up for the Dutch national team, which is certainly a disappointment for him.

However, as it stands, his recovery appears to be going well, with it suggested that the winger could be available to face his former side Leeds in the FA Cup on 5 April.

If that game does come a little bit too soon, you would expect the 24-year-old to then be available for selection for the following Premier League fixture against Wolves on 10 April.

When it comes to official updates out of West Ham, the latest we heard was from Nuno on 20 March saying: “He’s getting better each day… we are assessing day-by-day.”

Hopefully, there should be good news in the lead up to the FA Cup tie against Leeds, with Summerville’s conversation with Ronald Koeman suggesting that may be the case.

Should Nuno risk Crysencio Summerville against Leeds?

If Summerville is available to play against Leeds as expected, then Nuno will have a decision to make as to whether he starts.

With relegation to the Championship staring the East London club in the face, it may not be worth the risk to start the winger from the first whistle.

Keeping him fit for the Premier League must be the priority, as, while cup success would be welcomed, staying in the top-flight is also imperative.

Now, as the run-in begins, if the 24-year-old can continue from where he left off, the Irons will have an excellent asset for their survival attempt.
