West Ham Women Expert impressed by West Ham in 0-0 draw v Aston Villa
We’re delighted to welcome Michelle Irons as our exclusive West Ham Women’s expert. Each week she’ll be giving her views on the biggest talking points at Victoria Road…
Michelle Irons was impressed with West Ham on Tuesday night despite their failure to beat Aston Villa and move further away from the WSL dropzone.
Olli Harder’s side drew 0-0 at Victoria Road with the away side moving themselves off the bottom with the point.
There weren’t many chances throughout the 90 minutes but West Ham came closest through Gilly Flaherty and Katerina Svitkova in each half.
Nevertheless, Michelle Irons was happy with the point as she expected a tough game and was particularly pleased with Hawa Cissoko.
Speaking to West Ham Zone, she said: “It was a good match from both sides who were both pushing and pushing for the winner. I’m really enthused again by our play, we were defensively solid with our backline of Hawa Cissoko, Gilly Flaherty and Grace Fisk. I’m pleased to see Hawa cement her place now she’s been pivotal to us keeping clean sheets these past three games now.
“I would have liked to have won three points and start that breakaway but a game like this was never going to be easy when both teams are determined like that.
“But it’s safe to say I’m slightly confident we can continue like that keep our heads high and push on the last few games and survive.
“Next up is Everton, which will be a massive game again. I’m once again positive as we are off the bottom and into ninth place.”
Cissoko, 24, has found herself in and out of the West Ham side this season, playing eight times in the WSL in total and only starting two matches [FBRef].
The French defender was booked against Villa but she also managed to impress by keeping the away side’s attackers at bay.
West Ham haven’t conceded in their last three matches now and enjoyed big wins over Reading and Chichester on either side of the international break, amassing 16 goals in total.
Everton will no doubt prove to be tough competition this weekend though with the Merseysiders winning their last three and sitting fifth in the WSL standings.
