West Ham Women expert Michelle Irons is delighted that lifelong Irons fan Kate Longhurst has signed a contract extension.
The midfielder is now set to extend her time in a Hammers shirt to five seasons, having arrived in 2018, after making her 100th appearance for the club towards the end of the campaign just gone.
Her season was a memorable one and as well as an extension it netted her the Women’s Hammer of the Year, Coaches’ Player and Players’ Player of the Year awards, and Irons believes it was all well-deserved.
Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone she said: “Kate signed a new one year contract on May 13th soon after the season ended and this news was very welcome to us West Ham fans as she is a firm fan favourite.
“It’s well known that Kate is a massive West Ham fan and is a season ticket holder for the men’s team.
“Her performances during the season warranted an extension as she was a calm and driving influence in the team.
“Her stand out goal against Spurs in the away fixture was a fantastic moment during the core part of the season, as we fought back from a goal down to get a point against them.
“Kate is such a versatile player. She has played this season in a range of positions, including at the back while still marching forward, and this got her involved with an excellent assist for Tameka Yallop against Leicester City at home.
“Kate is a player you need in your squad as she does everything right. I’m really pleased to see her continue in Claret and Blue.”
As a fan of the club it is likely that supporters see a bit of themselves in Longhurst so they will be delighted she is staying.
The 33-year-old is one of the senior influences in the squad which will be all the more important since Gilly Flaherty is now gone.
And if she can keep producing like she did this year then she will no doubt be in line for a similar renewal next summer too.
In other West Ham news, the men’s team will have to overcome Jose Mourinho to sign one of their summer transfer targets.
