West Ham Women Expert calls for clarity after Ramsey arrives on loan from Man Utd
We’re delighted to welcome Michelle Irons as our exclusive West Ham Women’s expert. Each week she’ll be giving her views on the biggest talking points at Victoria Road…
West Ham’s swoop to sign Manchester United goalkeeper Emily Ramsey on an emergency loan has come as a shock to Michelle Irons.
Earlier this week, the Hammers announced on their official website that Ramsey, 20, had joined on loan until the end of the season with number one goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold suffering an injury.
Olli Harder started Courtney Brosnan in goals for the 2-0 defeat to Chelsea last weekend, much to the surprise of supporters. Ramsey was named on the bench, even though she had not yet been announced as a new signing.
Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, West Ham Women expert Michelle Irons called on greater clarity from the club in regards to injury issues.
She said: “This came as a bit of a shock – we had no idea that Mac was injured. No details have been released from the club which is frustrating.
“I knew who Emily was as she is well thought of at United and I remember her having a loan move recently to Sheffield United.
“But for her to just appear on the team sheet against Chelsea was a surprise and personally, I think that was unprofessional of the club as questions were being asked on social media.
“Unfortunately the club now have a reputation of not keeping season ticket holders updated on injuries, suspensions international commitments etc.”
According to stats by FBRef, only three goalkeepers have made more saves in the entire WSL than Arnold has this season for West Ham [49]. However, the Aussie ‘keeper has only kept one clean sheet all term and ranks at a lowly 10th for save percentage [61%].
Ramsey is yet to play in the WSL this season but has played twice since joining Man United from Liverpool in 2018 and has also represented England at Under-17 and Under-19 levels.
It remains to be seen how much we’ll see of her this season but Brosnan did quite well in the 2-0 defeat to Chelsea last week, saving six of the eight shots on target against her. That suggests she’s likely to continue starting in goals while Arnold recovers from her injury.
