West Ham United Women expert delighted by Dagny Brynjarsdottir contract extension

We’re delighted to welcome Michelle Irons as our exclusive West Ham Women expert. Each week she’ll be giving her views on the biggest talking points at Victoria Road…

West Ham Women expert Michelle Irons is very pleased with the news that midfield force Dagny Brynjarsdottir has extended her contract with the club.

After 27 appearances and eight goals in the previous campaign the Iceland international has signed a two-year extension to keep her playing in an Irons shirt until 2024.

Arriving only a year and a half ago the 29-year-old has established herself as a key figure in the Hammers midfielder and Irons is a big fan.

Speaking to West Ham Zone she said: “Dagny has been another pivotal player during the season, playing almost every game for West Ham.

“She commands that midfield and has made her mark with her height presence and fantastic range of passing that she has.

“She formed a nice partnership with Abbey-Leigh Stringer, which allowed her to get forward and really expose teams that had what could be considered ‘small’ centre halves.

“Dagny’s goal in the home fixture against Spurs proved to be a crucial one as part of well-earned result for us where it could have gone either way.

“Dagny makes well timed late runs into the box in the style of men’s player Tomas Soucek and has an impressive fitness level.

“And on a personal level I’d like to see either her or Kate Longhurst become the new captain.”

A Hammers fan like her midfield colleague Longhurst, it is no surprise that Irons has chosen those two as the most likely candidates to be the new skipper.

Whoever gets the role will have big shoes to fill following in place of the departing Gilly Flaherty but players who care about the club whether they play for them or not are clearly a good bet.

Brynjarsdottir has proven herself to be a valuable signing in the 18 months she’s been at the club and fans will hope she can continue in that vein for some time.

In other West Ham news, signing one of the summer transfer targets could help the men’s side keep hold of Declan Rice long-term.
