West Ham’s summer signings rated – 4/10 must improve, 8/10 rare piece of quality

West Ham signed eight players in a turbulent summer transfer window.

The Hammers were sleepwalking in the transfer window until hope emerged following Mohammed Kudus’ £55million move to Tottenham.

It was imagined that progress would be made following the Ghana international’s departure, but El Hadji Malick Diouf signed from Slavia Prague, and everything went quiet again.

With that said, things did speed up in the final weeks at the London Stadium, but hopes aren’t high as a result of the summer business as a whole.

West Ham Zone has ranked the signings made throughout the window.

West Ham’s midfield overhaul and issues in attack

A lot of issues have been raised regarding West Ham’s poor midfield.

James Ward-Prowse and Guido Rodriguez have shown just how poor they are in the defeats to Sunderland and Chelsea.

The shocking performances seemed to wake David Sullivan up, with Mateus Fernandes arriving for £40million from Southampton.

Fernandes made all the difference in the 3-0 win against Nottingham Forest, and the Hammers look like they have a gem on their hands.

Soungoutou Magassa has also arrived from Monaco for £17million, with high hopes around him.

Though Magassa is yet to play, he can’t be any worse than some of their current midfielders, and offers a different, more defensive approach.

The 21-year-old can also play centre back and has represented France at the U20, U21, and Olympic levels. He played for the France U21 team in the U21 European Championship.

Up front, concerns regarding Niclas Fullkrug seem to have been ignored, with Callum Wilson the only striker signed.

The 33-year-old was signed on a free, so it is a good signing in that sense, scoring against Nottingham Forest last time out.

However, there is an underlying feeling that injuries could come back to haunt him.

A mixed bag at the back for West Ham

Mads Hermansen signed from Leicester for £18million. The Dane was highly rated, but was at fault for arguably all three goals conceded on his debut.

He again struggled against Chelsea as he shipped five goals, but he looked more secure with a better back line in front of him in the 3-0 win against Forest.

Hermansen must keep improving.

Igor Julio, West Ham’s only deadline day signing, has had little gametime with Brighton, so he brings a lot of uncertainty with him for his loan spell.

However, the defender ranks inside the top one per cent for blocks in Europe, with 160, and his stats have him competing with the likes of Virgil Van Dijk.

However, Diouf has already proven his worth with the Hammers and has been one of their only bright sparks in the opening three games.

His £19million move from Slavia Prague is starting to look like a bargain.
