‘Unforgivable’, ‘Ridiculous’ – Many West Ham fans react to Bowen decision v Chelsea
Many West Ham fans have criticised Jarrod Bowen’s marking as Chelsea took the lead against the Hammers on Monday night.
Bowen was left marking Thiago Silva during an early Chelsea corner but the attacker failed to follow the Brazilian as he steered a header past Lukasz Fabianski.
The goal gave the home side an early lead and it was the worst possible start for David Moyes’ men as they then struggled to find a foothold in the game.
Bowen is an attacker so he can’t be criticised too much for his defensive failings but he had to at least follow and challenge Silva at the corner.
He didn’t, and Silva was able to have a free header just a few yards away from the Hammers net which shouldn’t be allowed.
This is especially irritating as Chelsea have been the most effective side in the league from set-pieces this season, followed by West Ham.
The Hammers must’ve worked on defending set-pieces in the last week so Moyes will be furious that his side conceded a such a soft goal from a corner.
After Bowen’s error, we are certain that Moyes will make sure that there are no mismatches while defending future corners so his side aren’t punished in a similar manner again.
Some fans took to social media to vent their frustration at Bowen and their confusion over how the attacker was left marking Silva in the first place.
