West Ham United: David Moyes will love George Earthy and Lewis Orford after what they did
West Ham fans witnessed a sneak preview of the club’s future as George Earthy and Lewis Orford starred in the Under-21s 2-0 victory over Norwich City on Friday (12 April).
The win over 18th-place Norwich took the Hammers to the top of the Premier League 2 table, going three points clear of Tottenham Hotspur, albeit Spurs having three games in hand.
Orford opened the scoring after just 10 minutes, firing home from inside the penalty area before Earthy doubled the lead 20 minutes later with a stunning effort.
Impressively, the young West Ham stars were able to see out the match, keeping their first clean sheet since a 4-0 win over Colchester United in the EFL Trophy in December.
Both youngsters have been on the fringe of David Moyes’ squad this season, with Earthy handed his senior debut during West Ham’s 5-0 win over Freiburg in the Europa League.
Although Orford cannot say the same yet, he was on the bench for the 2-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday 11 April, showing that the manager does have faith in the player to break into the first-team set-up.
West Ham United fans catch a glimpse of the future at the London Stadium
The club’s future will excite the fans at the London Stadium, especially if this duo are involved at some point. Their recent involvement with the first team would suggest that may not be too far away.
Earthy has only just signed a new contract with the Hammers, putting pen to paper on a three-year deal in September 2023, as the club confirmed.
As for Orford, the now-18-year-old also signed a contract last year, putting pen to paper on his first professional contract following his 17th birthday. [West Ham United]
The duo could even be handed opportunities by Moyes this season, with West Ham likely to be focusing on the Europa League but still a handful of Premier League matches left to play.
Despite being just one point behind Manchester United in the table, the Hammers are 12 points away from fifth place, which will not see them secure Europa League football for next season.
