Zouma to earn £120,000-a-wk at West Ham, transfer to be announced today
West Ham are committing themselves to paying a lot of money for Chelsea centre-back Kurt Zouma after deals were agreed, according to the Mirror.
The newspaper reported via their print edition on August 27 [page 61] that the Hammers are paying Chelsea £25.6million for the 26-year-old France international, who’ll be signing a contract at the London Stadium worth £31.2million.
It is understood that Zouma’s deal will be five years long and sees him earn £120,000-a-week to make him West Ham’s best-paid player.
The Mirror adds that Declan Rice, Tomas Soucek and Michail Antonio will get new deals next summer to bring their wages to the level that Zouma is at.
West Ham’s need for new signings has seen them do something they probably shouldn’t have done – baulk to Zouma’s demands.
Earlier this summer, it was being reported that Zouma had turned down a move to the London Stadium because the Irons wouldn’t pay the Frenchman what he wanted.
But it seems that desperation has led to the Europa League club caving into Zouma’s demands, offering him £120,000-a-week and making him their best-paid player.
However, the best-paid player should be the best player at the club and not a new signing who is yet to prove himself there.
Zouma is a good defender, don’t get us wrong, and we really think he’ll do well in East London.
But signing him has risked causing discontent among the other top players at the club like Rice and Antonio.
We hope that is not the case but it’s a possibility and it’s something David Sullivan, David Gold and Moyes may need to keep a close eye on in the coming days and weeks.
In other West Ham news, the Irons are in pursuit of signing this Erling Haaland-esque centre-forward.
