Jarrod Bowen's decision to remain at West Ham this season was met with immense positivity.

The Hammers skipper is a West Ham legend and it looked likely at points that his time in E20 had run out.

Bowen is a quality player and he will not want to remain in England's second tier for long.

However, Bowen was convinced to stay for at least one more year to fire the Irons back into the Premier League with his contract being revisited ahead of this season.

The contract revision between West Ham and Bowen did not increase the length, but rather changed the terms, and it did include a release clause for Bowen.

And it appears that the Englishman included an affordable safety net with the details of that clause now emerging.

Bowen will not want to leave West Ham but if the Irons are not playing Premier League football after this season, he will have to think about his own career.

That is seemingly something he has already thought about as his new contract agreement includes a release clause to exit.

According to talkSPORT, that clause is set for as little as £15million and only comes into effect should West Ham fail to get promoted.

With Bowen being a fan favourite, pressure will certainly be rising on manager Nuno Espirito Santo to achieve that goal.

Nuno has been chosen as the man to lift the Irons out of the Championship, with promotion the bare minimum for 2026-2027.

Or else one of the modern West Ham greats will end his spell at London Stadium in what would be disappointing fashion.

Bowen has attracted interest from the likes of Chelsea and Everton, so it would remain to be seen if they come back in for him.

Bowen clause is the right move for West Ham

The including of the release clause may be frowned upon, but Bowen has committed to a season in the Championship in order to lift the Hammers up.

The Englishman could very well have left this summer as he is still capable of producing on the Premier League level.

Keeping the captain is a sign of ambition and it signals to the rest of the squad that the Irons will not chop their squad down just because of relegation.

Bowen remaining was West Ham's best chance at promotion, and if that does not work out, he does deserve to be afforded an exit.

And at £15m, he won't have trouble finding interested parties.
