Why Ben Nelson is primed for breakout season and West Ham's need for patience
West Ham United could finally be set to bolster their centre-back ranks.
With Axel Disasi now back at Chelsea and having also moved on youngster Michael Forbes, West Ham's depth in central defence has been chipped away at.
Meanwhile, the likes of Max Kilman, Jean-Clair Todibo and Konstantinos Mavropanos may all see their futures away from the London Stadium.
As a result, central defence is surely a big transfer priority for West Ham, and Leicester City talent Ben Nelson would be a good start to replenishing their ranks here.
The 22-year-old has been with Leicester since the age of nine, and has made 36 competitive career appearances for the Foxes' first-team.
And, despite being part of a side that suffered a shock relegation to League One in 2025-26, Nelson proved that he's a player ready to shine at Championship level.

West Ham Zone has been following reports that West Ham are keen on the £10million-rated Nelson this summer.
The Daily Mail claim that he's told Leicester of his desire to leave the King Power Stadium, with numerous bids already being turned down and even interest arriving from Manchester United.
Evidently then, West Ham face a competitive battle for his signature, but if they do land it, then they may just have signed a youngster who could be set for a career-best campaign in E20 next term.
Nelson played 24 times for Leicester in the Championship last season, starting 22 of those whilst also chipping in with a goal and an assist.
As per FotMob, his average of 12 defensive contributions per game ranked him in the top 12.6 percentile of all Championship central defenders for 2025-26.
Meanwhile, he also finished in the leading 14.3 per cent for his 1.84 tackles won per game.
Nelson scored amongst the very best second-tier players in his position as well for his 1.37 interceptions, 7.87 clearances and 0.42 fouls committed per 90 respectively.
Considering he put up these numbers in a Leicester side that finished 23rd and conceded 68 goals last season is hugely impressive.
Leicester may well be holding out for £10m, but West Ham could potentially get that price down by utilising his pressing contract situation with the Foxes to their advantage.
How long does Nelson have left on his Leicester contract?
Leicester don't really hold too many cards when it comes to negotiating the best possible price for Nelson this summer.
Naturally, relegation to League One puts them in a position where they need to cash in on their most valuable players who they can't afford to take into the third tier with them.
This can provide fertile ground for discount deals, and that could be the case with Nelson this summer.
Leicester know that his contract is set to expire with them next summer, and so now may well be their final chance to bank a sizeable fee for the defender.
West Ham can play into that, perhaps convincing Leicester to take a slightly lower fee than they would ideally like in order to ensure they still get a solid figure for him.
Patience may be required for the Hammers though, as should teams continue to scoff at the £10m asking price, it could even be a case of this going all the way to the transfer deadline to see who blinks first.
