Edson Alvarez's future still looks likely to lie away from West Ham United.

The Mexico international was shifted out on loan to Fenerbahce by Graham Potter in the summer of 2025.

His loan to Turkey did not work out as planned, and he returned to the London Stadium in the close season.

Despite reports linking him with another departure, Alvarez failed to land a move away from the Hammers.

His one appearance under Nuno Espirito Santo came against Portsmouth in the Carabao Cup, and has yet to feature in the Championship.

Now, it looks as though a potential avenue has already opened up for Alvarez to jump ship, albeit temporarily, in January.

LaLiga outfit hold talks with Edson Alvarez representative

Alvarez, once described as an "animal" by his former team-mate Emerson Palmieri, looks certain to leave West Ham.

Indeed, according to Spanish publication La Colina de Nervión, Alvarez's agent has been working hard to find a solution for his client.

Their report said that Tarek Sebiat, Alvarez's European representative, has been in talks with Valencia over a loan in January.

Sebiat is said to have met with Valencia's director of football Braulio Vazquez, as the LaLiga strugglers look for reinforcement to try and climb the table.

However, there is one complication that may scupper Alvarez's hopes of moving to the Spanish outfit.

Why Valencia move might not happen for Edson Alvarez

On the face of it, a move to Valencia would represent a great option for Alvarez.

Los Che are coached by Alvarez's former Mexico boss Javier Aguirre, so he would playing under the guidance of a coach he trusts.

However, the report states that Valencia are weighing up two options, with Cruz Azul midfielder Erik Lira also on their radar.

Lira is represented by the same agency as Alvarez, and discussions were held with Valencia over both players.

Valencia essentially have to weigh up whether to pursue a loan for Alvarez, or to press ahead with a permanent transfer for Lira.

However, Lira's contract runs until 2029, which might make negotiations difficult for Valencia over a permanent transfer.

Alvarez's own lack of game time could count against him, though, so the 28-year-old is not forced to find his way to Valencia this January.
