West Ham’s Karren Brady confirms work under way to sign new midfielder for Graham Potter
Karren Brady has revealed what West Ham are targeting in the final few weeks of the transfer window.
It was known beforehand, but West Ham’s 3-0 defeat away to Sunderland showcased the need for transfer plans to be accelerated.
So far, Graham Potter has had very little backing in the summer window, and that needs to change if the Irons are to avoid another campaign at the bottom of the Premier League.
Several areas of the squad certainly need an injection of quality, but Brady has revealed which position they are looking at next, and what kind of profile they are looking for.

Potter set to be backed with midfield arrivals
With Edson Alvarez on his way out of West Ham, and several others massively underperforming, it is clear that the Irosn need to add strength and depth to that area of the squad.
Gudi Rodriguez and James Ward-Prowse started in West Ham’s defeat to Sunderland, and the lack of pace and mobility severely hindered their chances of getting a result against a highly energetic Black Cats midfield.
West Ham’s stats vs Sunderland
- 63% possession
- 85% pass accuracy
- 0 big chances

Live on talkSPORT on 17 August, Henry Winter pointed out their deficiencies in midfield, and Brady laughed at the response, but was in full agreement with the statement.
Winter asked: “Do you think you need more pace in midfield?”, to which Brady replied, “I think that anyone would know the answer to that question is yes, and that’s what we’re working on doing.”
West Ham certainly need more athleticism in the middle of the park, especially when the lack of wingers puts a heavy emphasis on their ability to transition centrally.
Where else do West Ham need to strengthen?
Niclas Fullkrug was a waste of space for West Ham against the Wearsiders, showcasing the importance of bringing a new striker to the London Stadium.
Jarrod Bowen has carried the weight of West Ham on his shoulders over the last few seasons, and he needs someone to come in and alleviate some of that.
Outside of that, West Ham’s defence was badly exposed on Saturday, leaving questions as to whether they are well-equipped in that area of the squad.
There is undoubtedly still a lot of work to be done on the recruitment front, and with just two weeks until the window closes, time is running out.
