West Ham want to sign towering Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst

West Ham are interested in signing prolific Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst, according to Italian news outlet Calciomercato.

They claim that the six-foot six-inch Dutch international is “liked” by West Ham, who are looking for a new forward to lead the line.

Serie A giants Roma, set to be managed by former Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho, are also credited with an interest in the 28-year-old.

Weghorst’s 20 Bundesliga goals and eight assists helped to fire Wolfsburg to a Champions League spot this season, leading the Independent’s German football expert Stefan Bienkowski to hail his “incredible” achievements on his personal Twitter profile.

He has been lavished with praise in the media, with Get German Football News editor-in-chief likening him to former Manchester United great Ruud Van Nistelrooy, in an exclusive interview with Football Fancast.

Real target man

West Ham have already been burnt by a big-money Bundesliga signing in the last two years.

Sebastien Haller arrived in East London to much fanfare from Eintracht Frankfurt in 2019, after scoring 15 goals in 29 league appearances, as well as five in 10 during a run to the Europa League semi-finals.

However his 18-month stay at the club was unsuccessful and he was shipped off to Ajax in January after scoring just 10 Premier League goals in 48 outings.

Weghorst, though, has consistently proven himself in Germany since his 2018 move from AZ in the Netherlands, breaching the 15-goal barrier in all three Bundesliga seasons.

A tally of 53 goals in 97 games shows his prolific nature in front of goal, while he is also a bigger and stronger striker than Haller who was never suited to playing with his back to goal as a target man, often preferring to run in behind defences and next to a fellow frontman.

Weghorst has proven he can adopt the role of lone striker at Wolfsburg, and would be a canny purchase by the Irons.
