West Ham want to sign Ajax forward Steven Bergwijn, loan or permanent transfer on cards – Sky Sports

West Ham want to sign Ajax forward Steven Bergwijn and haven’t ruled out a loan or a permanent transfer, according to Dharmesh Sheth.

Writing on his personal Twitter account (6 January), the Sky Sports reporter says that the Hammers are in the market for a wide forward during the January transfer window.

Bergwijn has emerged as a target, and West Ham would be open to a temporary or permanent deal with both options being explored.

“West Ham United remain in market for wide forward,” he wrote.

“Ajax winger Steven Bergwijn one of a number being looked at. West Ham exploring both a loan & permanent. 3.5 years left on contract. 8 goals from 20 starts in all competitions.”

Surprise

Bergwijn arrived in the Premier League a few years ago after shining with PSV Eindhoven, but it never really worked out for him at Tottenham with Jose Mourinho or Antonio Conte.

Since returning to Ajax he has scored 23 goals in 65 games and still has 3.5 years remaining on his contract, but the Dutch club have seriously struggled this season and he could be looking for a way out.

West Ham

Bergwijn is capable of playing on both wings or also through the middle, and that type of versatility is something that David Moyes would no doubt enjoy too.

With Said Benrahma being tipped to leave, Maxwel Cornet firmly out of the manager’s plans and Pablo Fornals sure to leave at some point in 2024, there is definitely a gap in the squad for a new attacker to come in and fight to make a place his own.

His arrival would potentially allow for Lucas Paqueta to move into a central position and that would make the team stronger, so we’re all for it happening if the terms are right.

In other West Ham news, Hammers make contact to sign PL defender who is “free to talk” to new clubs.
