West Ham want to beat Aston Villa to Schmid transfer as price emerges

West Ham look set to battle multiple Premier League rivals for the signing of Romano Schmid from Werder Bremen.

Attacking midfield appears to be a priority for the Hammers in the transfer window ahead of Graham Potter’s first full season in charge.

Harvey Elliott has been a name linked with a move to East London, with the talented Englishman rarely featuring under Arne Slot at Liverpool last season.

Schmid looks to be another target West Ham are currently monitoring, with the Austrian’s price tag being revealed in new updates.

West Ham considering a move for Schmid, according to reports

With Callum Wilson seemingly on the verge of signing for West Ham, their new striker must be provided with good-quality service.

Whilst supporters will be hoping that new arrivals El Hadji Malick Diouf and Kyle Walker-Peters can provide this from out wide on the overlap, a playmaker to pull the strings in the middle of the park is still necessary.

According to Jacob Steinberg on X (26 July), West Ham are considering a move for Schmid.

The Austrian international could cost around £13.1million.

The deal is not said to be at an advanced stage yet, but the Irons are aware of the situation, with Premier League rivals Aston Villa and Fulham also monitoring the 25-year-old.

Schmid’s data suggests he was unlucky to only register four assists last campaign.

With Lucas Paqueta failing to provide a single assist in the Premier League last season, Schmid could be brought in to replace the Brazilian, who seemingly has an uncertain future in E20.

Schmid could prove to be a shrewd signing

With the reported fee being a minimal one, West Ham could be in line to secure a smart signing in Schmid.

The Austrian has four seasons of Bundesliga experience under his belt as well as 25 international caps.

Signing this calibre of player for just over £13million seems like a no-brainer.

If West Ham could receive a sizeable fee for Paqueta and secure Schmid’s services on the cheap, then a more lucrative move for Elliott could still be a possibility for Potter and Co.

With Paqueta’s form nosediving in the past season, Schmid’s creative presence in midfield would be a welcome sight at the London Stadium as the Hammers attempt to re-establish themselves in the upper echelon of the Premier League.
