Sky Sports share late-night update on West Ham United bid to sign Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City

West Ham remain interested in Kalvin Phillips but the Manchester City ace’s wages “may prove a stumbling block”, according to Sky Sports.

The news outlet shared the late-night update on its website on Thursday (18 January), with Crystal Palace and Newcastle United also interested.

LaLiga pair Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are also said to be in the running to sign Phillips, who has struggled for playing time at Man City.

The Sky Sports update read: “West Ham also have a long-standing interest in Phillips but it is thought his wages may prove a stumbling block for any potential deal.”

Too many obstacles

West Ham’s interest in Phillips is hardly a secret, but it is looking increasingly likely that this is a deal that will not go through.

Whether it is the loan fee City are supposedly asking for – as high as £7million according to some – or Phillips’ wages, there are too many hurdles to overcome.

Then you have to factor in the competition from Newcastle, who are in desperate need of a midfielder before the January transfer window closes.

That said, West Ham are better placed in the Premier League and can also offer the prospect of European football over the coming months.

Barcelona and Atletico’s supposed interest throws another spanner in the works, meaning this will be a very tough deal to get over the line.

West Ham are not exactly in desperate need of a central midfielder, especially if it sets the club back multiple millions.

If there are indications that a deal can be done, though, then it does make sense to pursue this one further.
