Kalvin Phillips tipped to shine at West Ham United amid Manchester City transfer latest

Journalist Henry Winter has tipped Kalvin Phillips to “do a job” at West Ham should a loan agreement be struck with Manchester City.

West Ham remain interested in signing the England international for the remainder of the campaign [Sky Sports, 18 January].

The Irons face competition from Premier League rivals Newcastle United and Crystal Palace, as well as LaLiga heavyweights Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast [19 January, 7:13am], The Times reporter Winter said: “West Ham are a club he can do a job at.

“Then you’ve got Newcastle United, where he can absolutely do a job. He’s a good player.

“He was England’s player of the year two years ago and Gareth Southgate still rates him.”

Needs reviving

It is easy to forget at this point, 18 months on from his move from Leeds United, just how good a player Phillips is.

The 28-year-old was one of the best midfielders in the division with Leeds United in the 2020-21 campaign.

Phillips has also regularly starred for England at international level, including at Euro 2020 when he was a regular starter.

His move to City, worth up to £45million [Sky Sports], was well deserved but it just has not worked out for him at the Etihad Stadium.

That is not to say he cannot now shine elsewhere, however, and that could well be at London Stadium if an agreement can be struck.

The loan fee City want and the player’s wages are two stumbling blocks, but it would be a great piece of business if it does go through.

City will no doubt look to sell Phillips in the summer, so a loan deal with a view to a permanent move would make even more sense from United’s perspective.
