talkSPORT host says West Ham United move was ‘simple solution’ for Man United outcast Harry Maguire

talkSPORT host Mark Goldbridge says joining West Ham United in the summer would have been the “simple solution” for Manchester United defender Harry Maguire.

Maguire’s mother Zoe hit out at the negative and sometimes abusive messages directed at her son in a social media post on Thursday [14 September].

The 30-year-old has had a tough time of things at Old Trafford under Erik ten Hag, but he opted to remain at the club in the summer despite firm interest from West Ham.

Man United supporter Goldbridge questioned the defender’s decision, posting in a message on Twitter [14 September]: “If Maguire had gone to West Ham he’d be playing regular in a decent side and no one would have an issue with him playing for England.

“Really was a simple solution that was in his hands.”

Obscurity

Maguire scored an own goal for England on a rare appearance this season in the 3-1 friendly win against Scotland at Hampden Park on Tuesday [12 September].

The centre-back’s only outing at club level this campaign was in a 23-minute cameo from the substitutes’ bench against Arsenal on 3 September, and that was only because of mounting injury issues at the back for United.

Maguire was jeered by Scotland fans, which was entirely expected, but the fact he was mocked when touching the ball surely would have hurt.

There is no doubt the former Leicester City player’s stock has fallen massively, and it may well be that it never reaches the level it was at when he joined United in an £80million deal four years ago.

Everton

Maguire had the chance to kickstart his career elsewhere last month by joining West Ham after their £30m bid was accepted by the Red Devils, only to himself turn down the opportunity [Sky Sports].

It will forever remain a case of what might have been, as Maguire’s career is on course to drift into obscurity if he is happy to remain a bit-part player in Manchester.

In other West Ham news, Richard Keys appeared to take a swipe at Man United with regards to Maguire’s failed move to the London Stadium.
