West Ham United transfer news as Kalvin Phillips permanent twist emerges already

West Ham have the option to buy Kalvin Phillips on a permanent deal following his loan from Manchester City but are unlikely to trigger it while his wages remain high, according to Sean Whetstone.

The West Ham news source shared via his Twitter account on 24 January that Phillips’ wages would break the Hammers’ wage structure if they were to trigger the clause.

However, it is said that if the England midfielder lowers his demands in the future, their position on a permanent deal in the summer transfer window could change.

The deal is there to do

If Phillips smashes it in his loan deal at West Ham, perhaps even helping them to silverware in their aims to challenge for the Europa League, then the deal will be in place for the Hammers to get done if they decide he is worth it.

The likelihood also in that situation would be that Phillips would be settled and more than happy playing under David Moyes at the London Stadium, which could see him bring his wage demands down to a more reasonable level in an effort to remain at the club.

As things stand, though, the midfielder’s reported wage of around £135,000 per week would be too much for the Hammers to entertain, so any talk over a possible permanent deal will be pushed aside unless something changes.

Having the option there, albeit conditional based on negotiations between the player and the club, will be a positive to the Hammers because as mentioned previously, if he performs well during his time in East London, they could push to get it done.
