West Ham United: Ajax ace Steven Bergwijn opens up on January transfer links to London Stadium
Ajax ace Steven Bergwijn is fully aware of speculation linking him with West Ham, but says no official approach has been made.
West Ham were linked with the Netherlands international last summer and once again this month as they look to further strengthen out wide.
Bergwijn, under contract with Ajax until 2027, previously had a spell at Tottenham and is interested in one day return to the Premier League.
“In football you never know what can happen,” he told Voetbal International [31 January]. “I’m only 26, so of course you keep all options open.
“One day I would like to play in the Premier League again. I think that remains the best competition.
“I also had a very nice time there at Tottenham. I learned a lot, but in the end this was better for me.
“I have also read about interest from West Ham United, but as far as I know, nothing is happening.”
One to watch
The rumours linking West Ham with Bergwijn have died down over the past few weeks, but it is a move that would have made sense.
United are scrambling to find an attacking player in the final throes of the window to replace Lyon-bound Said Benrahma.
Bergwijn, hailed as “brilliant” by Netherlands colleague Virgil van Dijk in the past, did not exactly light up the Premier League during his time with Spurs but he did have his bright moments.

Since returning to Eredivisie with Ajax, he has scored 19 goals and assisted nine in 47 appearances.
Many will be quick to downplay that decent tally given it is in the Dutch top flight, but just look at Mohammed Kudus’ form in a West Ham shirt.
The fact Bergwijn is aware of the West Ham links suggests there could be a little more to this, but it will be one to look at in the summer, rather than in the next 24 hours.
In other West Ham news, the Hammers have reportedly been offered the chance to sign a defender from a European club.
