West Ham United to sanction Nayef Aguerd transfer after Man City match

West Ham United could still sanction the sale of Nayef Aguerd and Maxwel Cornet after the 30 August transfer deadline, according to Sky Sports reporter James Green.

Green reported for Sky Sports News [29 August, 1:50 pm] outside Rush Green and stated Aguerd may still leave the Hammers after the UK transfer deadline, with Al-Ittihad interested in securing his services [Santi Aouna].

The Moroccan, alongside teammate Cornet, is free to leave East London this summer and they have both been absent from the matchday squad for the first two Premier League fixtures of the 2024/25 season.

Aguerd and Cornet could be part of the squad for Saturday’s (31 August) clash with Manchester City, before then being moved on to Saudi clubs as their transfer window is open for an extra few days.

Green said: “Nayef Aguerd and Maxwel Cornet – we understand the club are willing to listen to offers, but it’s unlikely they’ll leave at this stage.

“However, there’s a caveat to that – the Saudi Pro League transfer window is open until 2 September, so there’s an opportunity to move players on until then.”

Will West Ham United sell Nayef Aguerd?

The 28-year-old could remain at the London Stadium this summer and fight for his place in the side. However, it seems destined that he will leave West Ham.

Lopetegui has bolstered his options in central defence with the signings of Max Kilman and Jean-Clair Todibo, and with Konstantinos Mavropanos also selected to start in the Premier League so far, it is in the best interest of Aguerd to leave for pastures new.

While it is admirable to stay and fight for his place in the side, Lopetegui sees no space for the centre-back among his current options and he risks upsetting the West Ham faithful if his refusal to leave results in Carlos Soler remaining with Paris Saint-Germain [The Guardian].

The match against Manchester City could be the last time Aguerd is present at the London Stadium as he stands a chance of making the matchday squad for the final time as a West Ham player.

It is a new dawn in East London and once Kilman and Todibo settle into life at the Irons, the pair have the potential to become a top centre-back pairing in the Premier League.

Aguerd was a capable squad option under David Moyes and featured in the squad that won the Europa Conference League in the 2022/23 season, but it is time to move on.

With limited time until transfer window slams shut – both in the UK and in Saudi – he needs to make a decision and secure his future away from West Ham.
