West Ham United to re-enter race for £40m Ajax star Edson Alvarez as Borussia Dortmund pull out of deal

West Ham United are set to re-enter the race for Edson Alvarez after Borussia Dortmund pulled out of a deal for the Ajax star, according to 90min.

The Hammers have identified the Mexico international as their ideal replacement for Arsenal-bound Declan Rice, but he was all set to join Bundesliga giants Dortmund.

But reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano reported (29 June) on Thursday that Dortmund have pulled out of the deal due to the asking price, and now West Ham are set to re-enter the race to secure their target.

West Ham

90min understands that Dortmund’s move for Alvarez has hit a snag and they are now making alternative transfer plans,” they wrote (29 June).

“Indeed, former Liverpool midfielder Emre Can is set to be offered a new contract and a move for Wolfsburg’s Felix Nmecha is being lined up.

“That’s opened the door for West Ham to re-enter the race for Alvarez, at a time when they are beginning to prepare for life after captain Declan Rice.”

Push

West Ham are in the perfect position now to get their prime target for the new season, and with Rice’s move to Arsenal all set to go through imminently they’re in a great spot financially.

Alvarez is proven at the highest level having played at the World Cup and in the Champions League this season, and also won titles in the Eredivisie too.

It’s also worth noting the value of a deal is excellent, because Ajax rejected a higher bid last summer from Chelsea because they didn’t want to lose him.

So now West Ham have a clear run at their prime target, with money to spend and a price they’re more than happy to match. It’s just about convincing the player that the London Stadium is where he wants to be.

It’s going to be a huge summer for the club to avoid another relegation battle and also to continue improving in Europe, so getting our prime targets in early would be perfect.

In other West Ham news, a European club have “promised to cooperate” with one player’s exit this summer amid Hammers interest.
