West Ham United star Gianluca Scamacca likes Roma photo amid links to boyhood club

West Ham forward Gianluca Scamacca isn’t hiding his love for Roma as he has liked a photo posted by the club’s official Twitter account.

The Italy international has been the subject of interest from his boyhood side for much of the transfer window and he isn’t doing much to dampen the rumours.

The 24-year-old admitted in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport on 12 July that it would be his “dream” to play under Roma boss Jose Mourinho and he has now liked a photo of the fans that was posted on the club’s Twitter page, with the caption “Giallorossa is unique”.

Perhaps as a one-off action, this wouldn’t really be a big deal because it’s the club he grew up supporting, but the reality is that he’s liking a photo from an official account of a team that’s desperately trying to sign him.

His previous admission about wanting to play for the Italian side was seen by many Hammers fans as being disrespectful because, at the end of the day, it is still our club that’s paying his wages.

This also isn’t the first Roma-related photo he’s liked over the past few days, as the forward also liked a post by the official Serie A account on 19 July that showed a picture of Mourinho and included the caption “Special one”.

It’s quite clear to see that Scamacca is a huge fan of the Portuguese and would relish the chance to work under him at Roma.

The forward said in his interview with Gazzetta that Rome is his “home” and that it would be a “dream scenario” to play under Mourinho, who he is sure he would “improve a lot under” if he were to make the move to the Italian capital.

The more this transfer saga unfolds, the clearer it becomes that Scamacca’s heart is already very much in Italy and that he is desperate to secure a move back there.

It appears unlikely that he’s going to try and force through a move after featuring heavily in pre-season matches, but West Ham really can’t afford to keep hold of a player that would rather be elsewhere and risk unsettling the rest of the squad with the start of the Premier League season less than three weeks away.

The saga is also clearly impacting the club’s ability to bring other players in due to the uncertainty around Scamacca’s future, so it could be time for the Hammers to let him go.

In other West Ham news, David Moyes and Tim Steidten are already stuck in a transfer rift.
