West Ham United stand ‘good chance’ of landing Edson Alvarez, Bayern Munich linked

West Ham are in with a “good chance” of singing Edson Alvarez despite Bayern Munich being interested in the Ajax midfielder, according to Christian Falk.

The Irons are looking to bring the Mexico international in to replace former captain Declan Rice, with De Telegraaf journalist Mike Verweij claiming on 17 July that Ajax want a fee close to £52million but are willing to settle for £35million.

Speaking to GiveMeSport on 19 July, Bild journalist Falk said the Hammers are well-placed to land the 25-year-old as they “have the money” and because Bayern’s priorities currently lie elsewhere.

“Bayern Munich also had him on the radar – and still – but it’s not so hot,” added Falk. “He’s not the only one in this position – and it would only happen after everything is done with Kane and perhaps Kyle Walker – so he’s not the first option.

“For West Ham, they have the money and Ajax want to see money, so they have a good chance.”

Efficient

The midfielder was in the spotlight last summer when the Dutch side reportedly rejected a bid in the region of £43million from Chelsea for his services – something he admitted to be extremely disappointed about.

Following the news, former Ajax star Wesley Sneijder said the club should’ve allowed Alvarez to leave because his style of play has “no use”.

That then led to former Hammers centre-back Rio Ferdinand jumping to defend the midfielder, saying he “does some of the stuff you don’t normally see” and that it was “definitely not Instagrammable”.

“He does the stuff when he breaks the play up and allows the more creative players to go and perform. These types of players are so invaluable and you appreciate them so much because they give you the platform to go and play the football Ajax love to play,” added the ex-England international.

West Ham

The way Ferdinand described Alvarez is exactly what West Ham should be looking for as we aim to bring in a player in a similar mould to Rice.

It’s good to see Bayern have cooled their interest in the Mexican, so it’s time for us to put money on the table now that we have plenty in the bank to complete a deal.

In other West Ham news, another midfielder wants to make the move to the London Stadium.
