West Ham United source makes Raheem Sterling transfer admission after Chelsea exit update

A West Ham United source suggests the Irons don’t have the money to pay Raheem Sterling’s transfer fee, according to Sean Whetstone.

Whetstone reported via the West Ham Football X account (23 August) that there is no truth in the links between the Chelsea winger and the Irons as his time at Stamford Bridge looks set to come to an end.

Sources suggest Julen Lopetegui already has too many wingers at his disposal ahead of the 30 August transfer deadline and they wouldn’t be able to afford the big transfer required to secure the England international.

Reports suggested that Sterling had emerged as a surprise late target for the Hammers this summer after the winger was told he wasn’t part of Chelsea’s long-term plans [HITC, 18 August].

Will Raheem Sterling exit Chelsea after West Ham transfer update?

While Sterling would clearly be an excellent addition to Lopetegui’s side and help bolster the Spaniard’s attacking ranks in East London, it seems as though the Irons’ attacking business may be done this summer.

Lopetegui has been well-backed since arriving in the Premier League and while one or two new additions may still be made in the next week, it seems unlikely that much more work will be done at the top end of the pitch.

Signing Sterling would all but block the pathway of Crysencio Summerville and Luis Guilherme who both only arrived at the London Stadium earlier this summer for reasonable transfer fees.

The England international could be utilised in other areas of the field, having previously played on both wings and even as a centre-forward, but any deal to take him away from Chelsea won’t come cheaply.

Unless some sort of loan agreement could be reached between the two clubs before the 30 August deadline, this deal seems incredibly unlikely to happen and that could well prove to be the best thing for all parties involved.
