West Ham United secure Maxwel Cornet upgrade as new transfer update emerges

West Ham United have secured an upgrade on Maxwel Cornet with Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville, according to Rory Jennings.

The Hammers are on the verge of confirming the signing of the Dutch winger, with reports suggesting he is undergoing a medical ahead of an initial £25million move to the London Stadium [Fabrizio Romano, 31 July].

Speaking on talkSPORT on Thursday (1 August, 10:54) he said: “Summerville is an upgrade, isn’t he? He’s probably an upgrade on Said Benrahma.

“He’s definitely an upgrade on Cornet. Cornet has never managed to play regularly and never really managed to stay fit and Summerville should really be a more successful player for West Ham United.”

Will Crysencio Summerville exit Leeds United amid West Ham United transfer rumours?

The Hammers have rightly been eager to strengthen their backline and striker options this summer, but the deal to bring Summerville to the London Stadium could well be the most important signing of them all.

Towards the back end of last season, David Moyes’ wide options were so limited after the departures of Pablo Fornals and Benrahama to the point that Ben Johnson was consistently filling in out of position.

Not only will Summerville fill that void, but he was one of the Championship’s best players last term. If he can replicate that form in the Premier League, he will be a massive upgrade on several of the options in Lopetegui’s ranks.

Hopefully, the finishing touches will be put on the deal with no late hiccups. £25million may be a lot of money to spend on a player from the second tier, but it feels like a sensible investment from the Hammers at this stage of the transfer window.

It will be interesting who else West Ham bring in between now and the end of the window as the start of the Premier League season draws closer.
