West Ham United respond as multi-million bid made for Michail Antonio
West Ham have responded to Gremio making a £2million bid for Jamaican striker Michail Antonio, according to Roshane Thomas.
The Athletic journalist reported on 28 June that the Hammers have turned down the offer made by the Brazilian club.
The 34-year-old front man enters the final year of his deal at the London Stadium with it running out in June 2025.
Via Twitter, Thomas wrote: “West Ham United have rejected Gremio’s offer for Michail Antonio, which is believed to be in the region of £2million. The Brazilian side are keen to sign Antonio who will soon enter the final year of his deal at #WHUFC.”
West Ham must demand more for Michail Antonio
The 34-year-old is not growing any younger and does not have what it takes to start week in and week out for the Hammers.
He’s also facing issues with his fitness and is no longer the clinical striker he once was – much to the worry of the manager.
Julen Lopetegui and the Irons hierarchy will be aware that he’s unlikely to sign a new contract and it does not even make sense to offer him one.
This summer is the last one the London outfit can realistically get a transfer fee for him so they’ve got to do whatever they can to drive his price up.
It’s important that another striker is signed regardless of whether or not Antonio leaves, with Lille striker Jonathan David a quality option.
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Antonio but fans certainly will be pleased with what he’s brought to the table over the years.
In other West Ham news, the Hammers want to secure the transfer of a player who’s set to leave Tottenham Hotspur this month.
