West Ham United ready to accept ‘exceptional’ bid for Edson Alvarez – Sky Sports journalist
West Ham United will only listen to “exceptional offers” for Edson Alvarez amid transfer inquiries for the midfielder, according to Florian Plettenberg.
The Sky Germany Journalist posted on X (22 August) to report that Alvarez remains “100 per cent” in the Irons’ plans for the new season, with Julen Lopetegui and the club considering him an important player.
Clubs have inquired over a transfer for the 26-year-old Mexico international, but Plettenberg stated that the Hammers are only willing to listen to “exceptional offers” as the 30 August deadline nears.
Alvarez is under contract at the London Stadium until 2028, and is reportedly nearing a return to first-team action for Lopetegui’s side [Sean Whetstone, 20 August], following an injury picked up at the 2024 Copa America.
West Ham must reject all transfer approaches for Edson Alvarez
Although the Irons have strengthened significantly in several positions so far this summer, losing Alvarez before the window shuts would put a significant dampener on the business done at the London Stadium.
Multiple wingers, centre-backs and forwards have been signed by Lopetegui in the window, but the only defensive midfield addition has come in the form of Guido Rodriguez on a free transfer from Real Betis.
After 30-year-old Rodriguez had a less-than-stellar debut against Aston Villa on the Premier League’s opening weekend, the absence of Alvarez was felt significantly and only heightened his importance.
With rumoured midfield reinforcements coming in the more attack-minded positions [The Mirror, 15 August], Alvarez will be the defensive lynchpin for Lopetegui this season, just as he was for predecessor David Moyes.
The Mexican – like fellow ex-Ajax team-mate Mohammed Kudus – has been a revelation since arriving in East London last summer, and the Hammers would be shooting themselves in the foot if they allow him to move on after just 12 months.
In other West Ham news, the Irons have told a club in Brazil what they’ll have to pay to sign one defender permanently this summer.
