West Ham United push for complicated Kyle Walker-Peters transfer in new update

West Ham United are still pushing for the transfer of Southampton defender Kyle Walker-Peters, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The journalist reported on 3 July that Flynn Downes could still be part of a potential deal to go the other way and join Southampton again.

Although the London-based club are still vying for his transfer, a move won’t be straightforward.

Why West Ham United need to sign Kyle Walker-Peters

Although Julen Lopetegui needs to upgrade his team across the board, a particular area of weakness is that of right-back.

Vladimir Coufal is currently the club’s only senior right-back following the departure of academy graduate, Ben Johnson this summer.

Although Coufal is still only 31 years old, he can’t be expected to play every game.

Hence, why a move for Walker-Peters should be on top of the Spaniard’s priority list this summer.

The fact that Downes could also be included in the deal is also a good thing for the Hammers, especially since the midfielder is ready to leave the club [The Athletic, 17 May].

The inclusion of the defensive midfielder would allow some money to be taken off the deal and allow West Ham to invest that elsewhere.

The Southampton right-back also has a vast amount of experience in both the Premier League and Championship.

Across his professional career, he has played 191 games for both Tottenham and the Saints whilst also managing to contribute to a total of 21 goals.
