West Ham United now in hunt to sign Ronnie Edwards after Man United ignore Sir Alex Ferguson transfer advice

West Ham United are one of three British clubs who are interested in Peterborough centre-back Ronnie Edwards, according to BBC Sport.

The broadcaster published on their live transfer feed (16 August, 11:55 am) that the Hammers could battle with Bournemouth and Rangers for the 20-year-old’s signature.

The defender has been on Premier League radars for a while, with The Sun reporting last year (26 April 2022) that Sir Alex Ferguson had “urged” Manchester United to sign Edwards in 2021.

If the legendary Alex Ferguson urges a club to sign a youngster, they probably have something about them.

West Ham could have a quality player on their books if they secure Edwards. Their hunt for a new centre-back continues after a deal for Harry Maguire broke down, per Fabrizio Romano (15 August).

However, while Edwards is clearly sought after and has plenty of potential, the step up from League One to the Premier League is tough on any player. Maguire, a seasoned top-flight veteran and full international, would suit the Hammers’ need for a solid defence much more than Edwards.

However, the Irons are seemingly pushing for a deal to sign former Arsenal centre-back Konstantinos Mavropanos, with the Daily Mail reporting (16 August) that the Greek international could return to the Premier League from Bundesliga Stuttgart.

Mavrapanos has become one of the German top-flight’s best young centre-backs and could potentially start for the Hammers, so Edwards could serve as an understudy to the senior players and continue his development in the Premier League.

It could prove a shred deal, depending on the fee.
