West Ham United make contact with Serie A club for new defender transfer, player gives green light to move
West Ham United have made contact with Genoa about signing defender Johan Vasquez this summer, according to 365Scores Mexico.
Writing on their website (20 July), the news outlet report that the defender is a “real target” for the Hammers and Inter Milan, as well as another unnamed Premier League club as they look to bolster their defensive options.
The 25-year-old is open to a move to one of Europe’s top clubs and has already “given the green light” to the proposals after talks were held with his representatives, with both teams expected to make more formal moves in the coming weeks.
The player has already rejected offers from Saudi Arabia, Mexico and the USA to continue competing in Europe.
West Ham United look for defensive reinforcements
After the arrival of Max Kilman at the London Stadium, some people may have felt that the reinforcements at centre-back were done for the summer.
But there are big question marks about the future of Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd [Hakim Zhouri, 11 May], and with Dinos Mavropanos not yet cementing himself as a regular there is certainly space for better options.
The club have been pursuing a deal for Jean-Clair Todibo and have even had a bid accepted, but he has agreed personal terms with Juventus and would prefer a move to Serie A [RMC Sport, 19 July].
That means Tim Steidten and Julen Lopetegui must look elsewhere for options to make the squad stronger, and Vasquez could fit the bill.
He is strong, aggressive, good on the ball, good in the air and open to the move. He would be willing to fight for his place in the team too, which creates great competition, so this is one to watch in the coming weeks.
In other West Ham news, the club have held talks over a £16.8m deal for a new attacker.
