West Ham United fee update shared for Flynn Downes after medical development
Southampton will pay West Ham United a fee of £18million for the signing of Flynn Downes this summer, according to Dharmesh Sheth.
The Sky Sports journalist reported via X on Monday (15 July) that the two sides have reached an agreement for the midfielder to return to St Mary’s having spent last season on loan with the Saints.
Downes has been given permission to undergo a medical with Russell Martin’s side, despite the fact he has made the trip to Austria with the rest of Julen Lopetegui’s squad for their pre-season training camp.
Will Flynn Downes exit West Ham United amid Southampton transfer links?
While some West Ham supporters will be gutted to see Downes depart given the fact he never got a real chance during his time in East London, this feels like it is good business from the Hammers.
To pocket a nearly £20million fee for a player who has never really held down a consistent first-team place following his move from Swansea City is excellent, especially given the fact the Irons already have a lot of depth in the middle of the park.
The 25-year-old was never going to displace the likes of Edson Alvarez or James Ward-Prowse under Lopetegui so it makes sense for all parties that he should be allowed to make a quick return back to the south coast.
Hopefully, the incoming cash will allow Lopetegui to bring in one or two more new additions ahead of the start of the Premier League season. While the Irons have already been reasonably active, a few more signings wouldn’t go amiss.
A new centre-forward is at the top of the agenda and while no deals exactly seem imminent, it wouldn’t be a shock to see that search step up a gear once Downes’ exit is officially confirmed and money is exchanged.
