West Ham United and Southampton stance on Kyle Walker-Peters and Flynn Downes transfer emerges

All parties involved in West Ham United and Southampton’s swap deal for Kyle Walker-Peters and Flynn Downes are willing to get transfers completed, according to Chris Latchem.

The presenter reported via Sky Sports News (28 June) that the Hammers have opened talks over a move for Walker-Peters and discussions have also begun over a permanent move to the south coast for Downes.

Reports have suggested the Southampton defender has already given the green light to the Irons [Fabrizio Romano, 28 June] and both clubs and Downes are open to a permanent switch even if negotiations remain complicated.

Speaking on Sky Sports News, Latchem said: “West Ham have opened talks with Southampton over the signing of Kyle Waker-Peters.

“He has one year left on his contract and we understand talks are also ongoing between the same clubs over a deal which would see Flynn Downes join Southampton on a permanent deal.

“We understand there is a willingness from all parties to get both deals done, but Sky Sports News has been told there is plenty of work still to be done and negotiations have been described as complicated.”

Will Flynn Downes leave West Ham United for Southampton in summer transfer window?

This deal was always going to be complicated because of just how many moving parts are included, but it will be a massive boost if all parties involved are keen to see it over the line as has been reported.

Personal terms are unlikely to be an issue for either player if that is the case and it will instead be down to the two clubs to agree a fee with one another, which will depend on the valuations of both Downes and Walker-Peters.

With only a year on his current deal, the Saints fullback shouldn’t cost the Hammers much at all so the transfer will likely see Russell Martin’s side pay West Ham a fee and Walker-Peters in exchange for Downes.

Hopefully, the factors complicating a deal can be dealt with quickly and in a fashion that suits both parties. The deal may well be complicated, but it seems that every party is willing to do what is needed to get it done.
