West Ham United and Everton make approach to sign winger Stephy Mavididi – Fabrizio Romano

West Ham are among a number of clubs who have approached Stephy Mavididi’s agents with the English winger potentially leaving Montpellier this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Writing via his personal Twitter account on Friday morning (3 June), the Guardian journalist reported that Brighton, Everton, Southampton and Marseille have also been in touch with the 24-year-old’s representatives.

Romano adds that a deal for Mavididi to leave Montpellier is in its “early stages” but he could move away from the Ligue 1 club “in the coming weeks”.

Clever business?

There aren’t that many English players who are playing abroad. But when does really well in a major European league, they’re usually always linked with a return to these shores.

Mavididi had an excellent 2021/22 campaign with Montpellier.

He scored eight goals and supplied three assists in 30 Ligue 1 appearances for the French outfit with a couple of those goals coming in a 3-2 win over Monaco back in January.

Mavididi was born in Derby, started his career at Arsenal before leaving them to join Juventus in 2018, where he played just once in the senior side before heading to Montpellier in 2020.

West Ham

The former England Under-20 international has had more of an adventurous career than a lot of English players who are older than him and those journeys are bound to have helped him develop a lot as a player.

It remains to be seen how much Mavididi will cost but the left-winger, who can also play as a centre-forward, plays in an area of the pitch where West Ham could do with some strengthening.

Unfortunately, a lot of other clubs are keen on the former Arsenal and Juventus forward so striking a deal could be difficult for a West Ham ownership that doesn’t like to spend too much money and regularly gets priced out of transfers.

In other West Ham news, an offer has been made to make a behind-the-scenes appointment at the club.
