West Ham United to announce Konstantinos Mavropanos transfer today

Stuttgart defender Konstantinos Mavropanos has completed his medical and will be confirmed as a West Ham player on Monday [21 August], according to Zeitungsverlag Waiblingen.

The Greece international is set to become the Irons’ third senior signing of the summer, following the arrivals of midfielders Edson Alvarez and James Ward-Prowse.

In an update provided on Monday [21 August, 07:51], the German publication reported that Mavropanos completed his medical tests well at the London club.

“A transfer is likely to take place this Monday. The defender was also spotted with sporting director Tim Steidten at the Hammers’ game against Chelsea at the London Stadium on Sunday evening.”

The report adds that West Ham are expected to pay €20million (£17.1m) upfront for Mavropanos in a deal that could rise to €25m (£21.4m) with add-ons included.

Squad taking shape

Many feared for West Ham after losing star man Declan Rice last month and initially struggling to get any of their own transfers over the line.

But Alvarez and Ward-Prowse have both joined over the past fortnight – the latter in particular quickly settling in with two assists on his debut in the 3-1 win over Chelsea on Sunday [20 August] – and others are set to follow.

Mavropanos’ arrival will strengthen West Ham at the back, with that an area they looked weak at times last season.

In an ideal world, the East London outfit would have completed a deal for Harry Maguire last week, but a move for the Manchester United defender surprisingly collapsed.

Instead, David Moyes is signing a cheaper alternative, but a centre-back who also has undoubted quality and should slot straight into the backline to face Brighton & Hove Albion next weekend.

Mavropanos has been a regular for Stuttgart in the Bundesliga over the past three seasons and therefore does not lack experience, while he also played seven Premier League games with Arsenal towards the start of his career.

With another deal now on the verge of being announced, West Ham’s squad is more than taking shape for the 2023-24 campaign.

In other West Ham news, a Serie A striker has emerged as a reported target for Moyes’ men.
