West Ham transfer news as Andy Irving loan decision set to be made

West Ham United may loan Andy Irving back to SK Austria Klagenfurt next season after an impressive season in the Austrian Bundesliga, according to Laola 1.

The Austrian outlet reported on its website on Wednesday (7 February) that Klagenfurt managing director Gunther Gorenzal said the 23-year-old midfielder must return to the London Stadium at the “appropriate time” for the Hammers.

Therefore, it remains unclear whether or not the Scotsman will reunite with David Moyes’ side this summer and the Irons sanctioning another loan at the end of the season remains a possibility for all parties.

Will Andy Irving be cut out for David Moyes at West Ham?

Irving has been a key part of Klagenfurt’s side this season, scoring three times in 14 league appearances this season as a crucial aspect of the Austrian Bundesliga’s side midfield, which should encourage West Ham United supporters.

However, Moyes’ options in midfield are already incredibly strong with the likes of James Ward-Prowse, Edson Alvarez, Tomas Soucek and Kalvin Phillips all fighting for a starting position. While the England international has only been signed on loan, there is potential for a permanent move.

That means it won’t be easy for Irving to fight his way into Moyes’, or whoever is in charge at the London Stadium, thinking. At 23 years old, will he be able to be a success in the Premier League with the Hammers?

Another loan switch this summer may be the best solution for all parties as Irving can continue to play regular first-team football and West Ham can assess his ability as he heads into the final year of his contract.

With Flynn Downes also returning from a loan switch, the competition for places could be intense this summer.
