West Ham transfer latest as Brownhill confirms ‘unbelievably difficult’ exit

West Ham have long been linked with a move for Josh Brownhill.

There has been a lot of talk regarding Graham Potter’s midfield so far this summer, with exits for the likes of Guido Rodriguez and Edson Alvarez on the cards.

Lucas Paqueta has been frequently linked with a move away from East London despite the Brazilian being cleared of any wrongdoing in his betting scandal.

Harvey Elliott and Douglas Luiz have emerged as potential new additions to Potter’s engine room, with both players facing uncertain futures at Liverpool and Juventus, respectively.

Brownhill may be the most realistic target of them all, though.

West Ham handed Brownhill boost as midfielder confirms exit

Romano Schmid has been another midfielder touted as a potential option for West Ham, with Potter clearly seeing this as an area of priority ahead of his first full season in charge.

Brownhill is someone who the Hammers are said to be long-term admirers of, the Daily Mirror has reported in its print edition (29 July, pg 51).

It comes after the midfielder confirmed his “unbelievably difficult” exit from Turf Moor after five and a half years on Instagram, with his contract having expired.

The 29-year-old was outstanding last season for the Clarets, netting on 18 occasions as Burnley secured promotion back to the Premier League.

West Ham are set to face competition from Celtic for the free agent’s signature, with Brendan Rodgers keen on taking the midfielder north of the border.

Brownhill on a free would be a smart signing for Potter

With four seasons of Premier League experience under his belt, bringing Brownhill to the London Stadium on a free would be an exceptional piece of business.

Whilst the more flashy additions of Elliott and Luiz would understandably excite supporters in E20 more, Brownhill would provide useful depth for the Irons and valuable competition for positions.

This would not be the first time West Ham have dipped into the free agent market this summer, with Callum Wilson reportedly on the verge of joining the Hammers after being released by Newcastle.
