West Ham to beat Chelsea to Jonathan David signing after positive transfer news

Jonathan David is a wanted man this summer, and West Ham may hold the upper hand in the race to sign him.

West Ham have endured a dismal campaign, and things havent improved much since the arrival of Graham Potter as manager.

One of the main reasons behind their failures this season has been the lack of attacking threat posed in games, with Evan Ferguson failing to impress among several other attackers underperforming.

With that in mind, it is evident that West Ham need to recruit a striker in the summer, and the latest update on David serves as good news.

David looks set to leave Lille this summer

The signing of a striker has been essential for seasons now at West Ham, and every time it looks like they’ve addressed it, things haven’t gone to plan.

Niclas Fullkrug’s signing is yet to have paid off, while Ferguson looks likely to return to Brighton in the summer, which will open the door for yet another arrival, which the Irons have no margin for error.

In regard to that, a report from the Daily Mail (16 April) states that West Ham are leading the race to sign David on a free transfer when his Lille contract expires, with Chelsea below them in the pecking order.

At 25 years old, David has years of development ahead of him, while already being at a very good standard.

If the Hammers are successful in their pursuit of the Canadian international, it would be a real coup, and one that would surely end their striker woes.

Potter could thrive at West Ham with David addition

While results haven’t improved, defensive shape and displays certainly have under Potter, and the injection of quality in the final third may be just what he needs to succeed.

The Irons have lacked threat in games, and David would almost certainly be able to influence that if his signing can be completed.

West Ham have a huge summer ahead of them to right their wrongs from the current campaign.
